After a tree comes down, the stump is what’s left between you and a finished yard. ArborWorld grinds and removes stumps across La Verne and the San Gabriel Valley – clearing the way for new planting, sod, hardscape, or construction.
Why Remove a Stump
- They’re tripping hazards in the yard.
- They damage mower blades and make lawn care harder.
- They attract termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring pests – a serious concern in Southern California where termite pressure is high year-round.
- They sprout new growth from the root system, especially on species like coast live oak and certain ornamentals.
- They get in the way of replanting, landscape redesign, hardscape, and any future construction.
- They reduce property value and curb appeal.
Stump Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal
Two different jobs with different use cases:
- Stump grinding – a specialized grinder reduces the stump to mulch from the top down, working 6 to 12 inches below grade. The remaining root system stays in the ground and decomposes naturally over the next 3 to 7 years depending on species and soil conditions. Faster, more affordable, and far less disruptive to the surrounding lawn and landscape. The right choice for nearly every residential situation.
- Full stump removal – physically excavating the entire stump and root ball. Necessary when the spot will hold a building foundation, a pool, a new tree planted in exactly the same location, or other situations where remaining roots would cause problems. More expensive, more invasive to the surrounding area, and rarely needed for typical landscape uses.
During the free estimate, we’ll talk through what you’re planning for the spot and recommend the right approach.
Our Stump Grinding Process
- Free estimate. We measure the stump, check for obstacles (rocks, irrigation lines, utility marks, landscape lighting), and give you a firm price on the spot.
- Utility check. Before any grinding, we make sure underground utilities have been marked through California’s Underground Service Alert (DigAlert) – required before any digging in California.
- Grinding. The grinder reduces the stump and the surface roots radiating from the base. Most residential stumps take from 30 minutes to a few hours depending on size and species. Hardwood stumps (oak, eucalyptus) take longer than softer species.
- Cleanup. Chips can stay on-site as mulch, be left in a pile for you to spread, or be hauled away – your call.
Palm Stump Grinding
Palm stumps are different from hardwood stumps. The trunk is fibrous rather than woody, the root mass is broader and shallower, and the grinding approach is different. We handle palm stump grinding regularly – Mexican fan palms, Canary Island date palms, queen palms, king palms, and the other palms common across La Verne and the San Gabriel Valley each have their own profile.
How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost?
Most residential stump grinding in the La Verne area falls into these ranges:
- $100 to $200 for a small stump (under 12 inches in diameter).
- $200 to $400 for a medium stump (12 to 24 inches).
- $400 to $800+ for a large stump (over 24 inches), with hardwood species at the high end.
- Discounted bundled pricing when grinding is added to a tree removal job.
Final price depends on size, species, access, and the number of stumps on the property. Free on-site estimate gives you a firm written number.
